Wk 8 – Artist Interview – Laura Scattergood

This week, I interviewed an artist with an extremely interesting piece. The piece was definitely an experience. As you walked into the Merlino Gallery, you would first notice that the walls are covered with threads leading towards a furniture piece in the center of the room. The artist claimed that she did this to draw attention to the center, and to focus the viewer onto the mirror in the middle of the piece.

This piece brings up many questions. Why is the focal point centered on the mirror made of plastic, yet lifelike bullets? Why are there firearms everywhere? If you look from a distance, it looks like a normal couch setting. Is this piece claiming that there is a hidden violence in us? Is this piece claiming that the source of this violence is ourselves, due to the mirror? Perhaps. I personally found this piece to be very provocative and interesting, and I thank the artist for creating such a wonderful setting.
